Making a Morgan
from scratch
Cliff Baker

Whilst on a visit to the dockyard at Portsmouth with HopMog, my local centre of the Morgan Sports Car Club, I was delighted to see over 80 Morgans parked beside Nelson’s flagship “The Victory”.
Most of the cars were built within the last ten years covering nearly every model including an Aero 8, but I quickly noticed a 1972 red Plus 8. In front of the car I was amazed to see a rolling chassis with working suspension.
At first one might think. “What is special about that?” Well, John Wright had meticulously made the scale model of the rolling chassis about 8 inches long and had made the body from minute pieces of wood expertly shaped and cut to replicate his own car.
All the parts must have taken a great deal of time and ingenuity, John’s attention to detail was a joy to behold. To make the gearbox he even had to take his own car apart to enable him to get the measurements to make the gearbox to the correct scale.
John told me he is in the process of making three of these models.
If there is enough demand he

would consider making more, but the cost will have to take in the hundreds of hours it takes to make a model of this calibre.
I only wish I had the skill and expertise to produce such a delightful model, something to be proud of for many years to come.
